A federal grand jury in June indicted Kevin Charles Pyles, 33, of Glendale, on a charge of intentionally defacing religious property. Prosecutors say he posted an antisemitic flyer on the door of Sha'arei Shalom Congregation, near 13th and Grovers avenues in Phoenix, on July 11, 2025.
The federal charge carries up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine. It comes after Pyles had already pleaded guilty in Maricopa County Superior Court to attempted terrorism threats against the congregation and the wider Jewish community.
The case was announced by U.S. Attorney Timothy Courchaine, with the FBI's Phoenix office and Phoenix Police Chief Matt Giordano.
What we don't know yet
His state sentence has not been reported. Kol Phoenix will pull the Superior Court docket and the federal case file to see where both cases stand.
How we reported this: based on the U.S. Attorney's announcement and coverage by KTAR, KJZZ and Jewish News of Greater Phoenix. An indictment is an accusation, not a conviction on the federal charge. Corrections and additions are welcome at [email protected].
